SAD: 11 WOMEN WITH 2 MEN FROM THE SAME FAMILY TO FARM AND THIS HAPPENED TO THEM
Tragedy struck on Monday, August 24, in Munya local government area of Niger state as 11 women belonging to the same family died in a boat mishap in River Sarkin Pawa.
The women, who are of the same family from Dan Gunu village were said to have gone to the farm to harvest groundnuts in company of two men, Nigerian Tribune reports.
The incident happened at about 6 p.m. on their way back from the farm.
The two men reportedly survived the boat accident.
While the people of Dan Gunu were still mourning their loss, a similar incident happened on River Guni, also in the same local government area, claiming three lives.
Both incidents occurred in the two rivers that combined with River Kaduna to form the Shiroro Dam.
In a condolence message to the bereaved families, Senator David Umaru, representing Niger East senatorial district at the National Assembly, described the incident as shocking and unfortunate.
Lamenting the lack of good road networks and bridges in the area, Umaru said the disaster had exposed the sufferings and hardship of the people of the area as a result of activities of the Shiroro hydro power dam.
There have been growing cases of boat mishap across Nigeria. According to the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi, it was caused by non-compliance with safety standards.
