You can learn this simple business during your stay at home/holiday. You can start in small scale by doing the write ups on your own T-shirt, friends will like it and ask you to even do for them. Just start something. Remember the “My Oga at the Top Saga”? you see those custom t-shirts? Need i say more? 

4. Online Registration: Yes, if you have a laptop and a bit of computer knowledge, i don’t know what stops you from enjoying both the pleasure and money derived from this Job. you can register virtually everything online.

Course Registration, Post-UTME Registration, JAMB Registration, Job Application, etc. You can even make extra cash from typing a$$ignments and projects for fellow students. Do i also need to tell you the thousands of Naira made during post UTME registrations? All the tools you need to make good money are all around you, you Just need to identify one and work your way through it.

5. Website Design/Hosting: I’ll be a bit biased on this one because that’s what i do currently and don’t know if its suitable for students or not. But i can authoritatively tell you students are taping into the hidden money from this lucrative business.

It may take a while to learn the entire concept of how this things work but its something you can easily do while you are home for holidays. Website Design may sound a bit complex so you might want to manage the little you get from setting up blogs for fellow students.

Why Many Nigerians Are Illiterate

The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy Education, Adult and Non-Formal Education,Jibrin Paiko says lack of political will is the major reason for high level of illiteracy in Nigeria.

Paiko said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the round-table discussion organised by a non-governmental organisation, Noble Mission for Change Initiative, in commemoration of the International Literacy Day.

”Lack of political will particularly, at the state and local government levels, is the major contributing factor to the high level of illiteracy in Nigeria.” he said.

“At the national level, we have a lot of policy documents in place, and most of them were developed with the support of development partners and distributed to the states. The issue is, we need political support and will at state level but we need the government to key in.’’ he said.

Paiko revealed that about 101 million Nigerians are literate, adding that Nigeria had all the necessary structure to boost the level of literacy in the country.

Paiko solicited the collaboration and funding support from states and local governments to develop education in Nigeria.

In her remarks, Nemi Okujagu, the technical adviser to the Statistician-General of the Federation, National Bureau of Statistics, said poverty was another cause of illiteracy.

Okujagu said a recent literacy survey in Nigeria showed that 90 per cent of the country’s citizens were poor, adding that two-thirds of global illiterate population were women.

She added the survey was done by random collection of data from households across the country.

In his presentation, Dr Saidou Jallow, senior programme specialist, UNESCO, advised governments to recruit and provide adequate remuneration to literate teachers to boost literacy level in the country.

Jallow said that government at all levels should also facilitate the establishment of ambassadors for adult literacy and non-formal education.

He noted that the bulk of illiterate Nigerians were domiciled in the northern part of the country and urged stakeholders to channel their efforts and resources to the area.

UNILAG Student Electrocuted By High Tension Cable

A female student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) identified as Oluchi Anekwe was yesterday, September 8, electrocuted on her way to her room in Sodeinde Residence, New Hall on the campus.

According to Pulse, Oluchi, a 300-level student of Accounting, who hails from Aku in Enugu state, was electrocuted when a high tension wire fell on her in front of the Sodeinde hall of residence in the campus.

She was immediately rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) but was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to Saharareporters, the scene of the tragedy remains dangerous as more students were seen walking beneath the pole unaware of the tragedy.

Firefighters left the scene without cordoning it off or placing caution tape around it.

An eyewitness reports that students have been witnessing some electric sparks off the cables on the same electricity pole, until the fatal collapse of a high tension cable killing the female student.

Oyo state governor, Abiola Ajimobi has made his intentions known to go back to school as a full time doctoral student as he had reportedly obtained a PhD form from the University of Ibadan.

According to a source at the Post Graduate School, the governor, who has applied to the Department of Political Science has his interest in public administration.

The source said: “Let me authoritatively confirm it to you that Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has applied to study political science and to specialise in public administration in our prestigious university. His form is being processed at the postgraduate school.

Ajimobi, while commissioning the university’s Distance Learning Centre, publicly revealed his intention to study Political Science at PhD level.

The Oyo state governor stressing his inability to gain admission to the university to study medicine some years back, appealed to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Isaac Adewole, to assist him in gaining the admission.

Ajimobi boasted that he should not be denied the opportunity to study at a PhD level because he has all the necessary requisite knowledge needed as a result of his wide exposure in politics and public administration.

The Director of Public Communication at the university, Olatunji Oladejo who spoke with P.M News claimed he was not aware if the governor had obtained a PhD form or not, adding that there is nothing secret about someone wanting to go to school.

An international institute which ranks universities in the world, Cyber-metrics Lab of Spain, has released a new list of the best universities across the globe and in Nigeria particularly.

For the fifth time in a row the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, has been rank as the top in the country.

Olarewaju Abiodun, the public relations officer of OAU, in a statement unveiled on August 20, noted that the university ranking body valued the curricular, research, academic and general administration of the university as the best in the country.

He noted that in the latest ranking, which was published on August 17, the universities of Lagos and Ilorin came second and third correspondingly.

On his own part, Bamitale Omole, vice chancellor of the university, said this was the first time in the history of higher education in Nigeria where one university “would maintain its position as the first and the best in the country for more than four consecutive times.”

Vice chancellor credited the achievement to years of hard work and commitment to duty of the academic, administrative and technical members of personnel, “whose contributions have placed the university far and above more than 100 other universities in Nigeria.”

The comment reads in part: “Prof. Omole emphasised his determination to make training and retraining of members of staff, on a regular basis, his topmost priority, adding that he would not rest on his oars until OAU becomes the best in Africa, and one of the top 10 in the world.”

He asked the federal government to invest more funds into university education in the country in order to achieve more.

Oyo Stops Payment Of WAEC Fees For Students, Introduces Education Levy

The Oyo State Government would no longer pay the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) registration fees for students, Mr Soji Eniade, the State Head of Service has said.

Eniade also said that from the 2015/2016 Academic Session, students would pay annual Education Development Levy of N3,000.

This is contained in a state issued on Wednesday in Ibadan by Eniade.

The statement is titled: “Efforts of Oyo State Government to Address Poor Performance of Students in Public Secondary Schools.”

He said that government took the decision in order to guard against poor performances of students in public schools.

According to the statement, the state government has stopped further payment of WAEC registration fees with effect from 2015/2016 academic session.

“This is as a result of poor financial status of the state government, coupled with the lackadaisical attitude of parents and students to the promotion of quality education.

“Apart from this, the government also introduced payment of N3,000 by all students on annual basis as Education Development Levy.

“The payment will be made in three equal installments of N1, 000 per term; the fund gathered will be utilised to complement government’s effort to improve infrastructure in public secondary schools.”

Besides the financial aspect of the ‎re- positioning, Eniade said that there would be enforcement of 80 per cent attendance of students in schools.

Other measures taken by the government include cancellation of automatic promotions, and re-invigoration of extra mural cla$$es, as well as establishment of zonal education monitoring committees, among others.

“This will go a long way to bring a halt to truancy among students and prevent social ills within and outside schools’ premises,” he noted. (NAN)

Following the conclusion of investigations of cases of examination malpractices detected during the conduct of the examination, 1,859 candidates had their subject results canceled and 453 candidates had their entire results cancelled.”

“Additionally, the entire results of candidates presented by 185 schools have been withheld while investigations into alleged examination irregularities are being conducted. This number includes 119 schools which were involved in ma$$ cheat*ng the objective test and were identified with the aid of the new anti-malpractice software which were call item deferential profile,” he added.

A total of 268,771 candidates took part in the exams from 868 public and private second cycle schools.

UNILAG PREPARES FOR A RECORD POST-UTME CANDIDATES

Olagoke Oke, JAMB deputy registrar (information), has said that more than 32,000 candidates will write the 2015 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) into the University of Lagos (Unilag).

The examination is scheduled to hold from Wednesday, August 12, to Friday, August 14.

Olagoke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, August 8, that the figure was close to four times the 9,000 that was initially posted to the institution by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

NAN informs that the JAMB, in collaboration with some public universities, has agreed to raise the bar of the cut-off marks of their institutions from 200 to 250 for the various courses.

This development generated an outrage among the candidates. Their parents and stakeholders protested too, called on the federal government to intervene.

The decision was later reversed after consultations between the JAMB, represented by Professor Dibu Ojerinde, and the federal government.

Olagoke said about the forthcoming examination: “I want to say that all logistics toward a smooth conduct of this examination are fully in place, we have always been ready for situations like this and have always got it right.

“Before now, we were hoping to put logistics in place for the initial 9,000 candidates, but with the reversal of the decision, we now have to re-adjust and I want to say that we are fully prepared.

“All our computers and its accessories, the backups, alternative power supply as well as adequate personnel that will conduct the examination are all ready.’’

The deputy registrar noted that the university was compelled to extend the exercise to three days because of the large number of candidates seeking admission into the institution.

However, he advised the candidates to arrive early at the examination centres to ensure that the exercise was hitch-free.

Meanwhile, the Prof Dibu Ojerinde has predicted that post-UTME screening exercise, organized by higher institutions in Nigeria, would soon stop, following the introduction of the computer-based test (CBT).

Ojerinde said the reason for this is that the CBT mode of UTME had helped to completely eradicate examination malpractice.

Post-JAMB tests for applicants were introduced my many universities and polytechnics before they are offered admission, irrespective of whether they passed the JAMB examination. However, the testing also sparked criticism, as it was described as a means of extorting money from applicants.

STUDENT REMANDED IN PRISON FOR DOING THIS TO HIS PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND

A 28-year-old student has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly jilting his girlfriend, who is said to be seven-month pregnant.

According to a Mararaba Upper Area Court on Friday, the student identified as Gimba Emen, was reported to have had consensual sexual intercourse with his girlfriend, Jessica Ibrahim which resulted to pregnancy, but he kicked her out afterwards.

Vanguard reports that the prosecutor, Sergeant Samuel Okoro, told the court that Jessica reported the erring boyfriend at the Sani Abacha Road Police Station, Mararaba, on August 4, adding that sometime in January, the accused approached Jessica for a relationship to which she accepted.

The police officer also alleged that the accused deceived and deceitfully induced the complainant, who is not lawfully married to him, to believe that he will marry her.

“The accused cohabited with Jessica and had sexual intercourse with her which resulted into pregnancy.

“He drove her out of the house without providing for her needs,’’ Okoro was quoted to have said.

The offence committed by the accused contravenes Section 383 of the Penal Code. Section 383 and the prosecutor has prescribed a three-year jail term as penalty for offenders.

While denying the allegations leveled against him, Emen told the court that he had a relationship with Jessica, but that it was in the past.

The prosecutor, who objected to the bail of the accused, argued that he is simply trying to deny responsibility and must be punished for his acts.

Mr Vincent Gwehemba, who presided over the court, ordered that the accused be remanded in Keffi Prison until the next adjourned date, August 17.

Suspected cultists yesterday August 4th shot dead a student of the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, AIFUE ,in Owerii Imo state. MFM offers N91 mil to 180 First class graduates

Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries on Saturday offered financial rewards of N91 million to its members who earned first class grades from different universities across the country.

The General Overseer of MFM, Dr. Daniel Olukoya, made the announcement in Lagos at the monthly live broadcast programme of the church, tagged, “Power Must Change Hands,”.

He said 180 first class graduates in the 2014 academic year and two others who received NYSC Presidential honours after completing the National Youth Service Corps would get N500,000 each.

Olukoya said the first class honours award, which started with 12 students, had risen to 180 and explained that it was meant to encourage hard work among students.

He said the award was put in place to reward members of MFM who were dedicated to their academic work, while also creating time to serve the Almighty God.

Mrs. Shade Olukoya, a pastor, with Prof. Bamitale Omole Vice Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, presented the award to the recipients.

Omole lauded the recipients for their dedication to their academic works and also serving God.

He commended the students for making themselves, families, and the church of God proud through their hard work.

Omole urged the recipients to appreciate the grace of God upon their lives and noted that many of their peers who started with them could not complete their courses for different reasons.

He called on other churches to emulate MFM by encouraging hardworking students through similar awards.

“The award is worthy of emulation, I urge other households of faith to follow MFM steps to encourage hard work,” he said.

WAEC To Withhold The Result Of Candidates In 19 States

The West Africa Examinations Council, WAEC has warned that it will withhold the results of students in 19 states over non-payment of about N4 billion the candidates’ registration fees by the state governments.

According to the Head of National Office, HNO, Mr Charles Eguridu , “The affected states should off-set the registration fees of their candidates as soon as possible, as we cannot guarantee that the results of their candidates for the May/June 2015 Wa$$CE will be released alongside others.”

“Many of the states of the federation, as part of their education policy, pay the registration fees of candidates for the Wa$$CE, particularly in the public schools.

“This is quite commendable as it afforded many indigent students the opportunity to sit our examinations and relieved many poor parents of this financial burden. “As I speak to you now, we are cash-strapped as a result of the delay in off-setting the registration fees owed the Council by some states. As a result, we are finding it difficult in meeting our financial obligations, particularly to our supervisors, examiners and service providers.

“We have written to the affected states governments without any response. The poor response is threatening the smooth operations of the Council.”

He however did not mention the states involved but urged them to pay up within the next two weeks.

Benue State University student allegedly commits suicide after he was withdrawn from medical school after spending 10yrs

His name is Idoko Nicholas Inalegwu and he was a medical student of Benue State University, Makurdi. He died recently in an unexplained accident. His friends believe he committed suicide because he had fallen into heavy depression after receiving news of his withdrawal from medical school after spending 10 years.

According to Benue.com, after the student died, medical students of the school took his coffin and deposited it at the office of the vice chancellor in protest, blaming the school's action for his death. See the photos after the cut...

Idoko was withdrawn for failing a haphazardly organised resit exam that has bedevilled medical students in the institution over the years.

Speaking under anonymity in a telephone conversation, one of the students said they believe that Idoko took his own life because he couldn’t bear the news that his 10 years in medical was in vain.

“He had been talking about it, that he wish he died a painless death. The school have finished him. There is no where in the world that a medical student is withdrawn after spending 10 years.” He said.

According to Benue.com, the students had complained about the manner in which exams were conducted, where resit exams were prolonged for up to one whole year as against the stipulated six weeks, with no efforts to engage the students.

After spending 12 years without graduation, that many of the students in the medical school have become disillusioned, frustrated, depressed and some have attempted suicide due to the stagnation and irregularities but the school management was continuously adamant about the psychological effects of their long stay in medical school.

The students, after an altercation at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary, obtained the coffin of their dead colleague, marched to the VC’s office, vowing not to leave until their grievances which bother around the haphazard conduct of exams, manipulation of results, withdrawals and accreditation, are resolved.

The students this morning, blocked the Gboko-Makurdi Highway causing a congestion of traffic. They also burned tyres, carrying placards demanding that their Vice Chancellor address them. They accused the VC and provost of paying a deaf ear to the predicaments of the medical students in the school over the years.

NYSC BARS PREGNANT WOMEN, NURSING MOTHERS, PG STUDENTS FROM SERVICE

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has barred pregnant women, nursing mothers and Post graduate students from partaking in the national service across the country.

NYSC DG, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, said the exemption of people in these categories from service was because they would not be able to undergo the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC, which is mobilisation, orientation, primary assignment and winding-up passing out parade.

Olawumi said it didn't make sense that pregnant women and nursing mothers would be absent from these stages of the national service, only to resurface for posting to their various places of primary assignments. The NYSC also said that pregnant women and children would no longer be allowed into orientation camps across the country.

Ooni Of Ife Intervenes In OAU Crisis, Workers Suspend Strike Action

Aggrieved members of the Non-Accademic Staff Union, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have suspended a strike they embarked upon about three weeks ago. The strike was to protest the alleged non-payment of their 64-month hazard allowance. It was gathered that the workers suspended their strike after a meeting on Wednesday with the school management and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, as the mediator.

The workers suspended the strike following a promise by the management to pay them palliatives When contacted, the Chairman of NASU, OAU chapter, Wole Odewunmi, confirmed the suspension of the strike. He said, “We have agreed to suspend the strike following the Ooni’s intervention. Our members will be resuming on Friday because we still need to put some things in place.” It would be recalled that the workers embarked on a protest over their unpaid hazard allowance. In a bid to show their grievances, they paralysed activities on the university campus by closing the library and the senate building. They also blocked the major entrances and refused to supply light and water to the campus.

As the crisis deepened, the authorities of the university closed the school. The authorities later ordered students and the workers to resume in less than a week. To also prevent further protests, no fewer than three Armoured Police Carriers were positioned close to the university’s gate with about 100 policemen seen at the school’s gate on Monday. The management, through a press release by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, last Thursday, vowed to punish any worker who did not resume on Tuesday (today). “These illegal activities have been reported to the appropriate security agencies. In view of the total disregard for constituted authority and the recalcitrant behavior by members of NASU, all NASU members are hereby directed to return to their duty posts on or before Tuesday, July 21, failing which appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against erring members of the university,” the management had said.
