A 32-year-old woman, Shakirat, has asked an Ikorodu Customary Court, Lagos to dissolve her marriage to a 40-year-old trader, Salau Kehinde.

Sakirat alleged that her husband beats her often, especially over sex, The Nation reports.

According to Shakirat, their marriage of 10 years had produced two children, but they had been living separately for two years now.

She explained that she left him after he kept threatening to pour hot water on her.

“His friend advised him to beat me up and he became fond of beating me. He would beat me whenever I returned from work, he would beat me when I told him I was too tired to have sex, or for any flimsy excuse,” Shakirat stated.

She added that her husband did not have any respect for her family.

Addressing the court, Kehinde said he used to beat her whenever she denied him of sex and if she came home late from her trading business.

He however said he had no intention of bathing her with hot water as he had only boiled it to threaten her.

“She refused to cook for me when she was pregnant. She also said I should look for another wife,” he added.

Kehinde, who said he was willing to take back his wife if she wants to stay with him, promised to stop beating or threatening her.

Presiding over the case, the court’s president, Olu Adebiyi, asked Shakirat what she wanted and she replied: “I want this court to dissolve our marriage and grant me custody of our children.”

The case was adjourned to September 13.

There has been a number of divorce cases in recent times. About two days ago, a 42-year-old housewife, Doris Oseni, had filed for divorce after she caught her husband, Prophet Femi Oseni, on the floor of the church office, having sex with another woman.
